Ann is the Deputy Director for RSSBs System Safety and Health Directorate. She leads a mixed disciplined department that is responsible for the delivery of the GB Rail Industry Health and Safety Strategy.

Ann is a safety professional of over twenty-five years’ experience, mostly rail related. She joined RSSB in 2000 as a Human Factors Specialist, before moving to head up the HF department which she built up to a total of 14 professionals with an international reputation. She spent the early part of her career at Cranfield University as a Researcher undertaking aviation safety research for the UK and American Aviation Authorities and Shell.

Ann’s academic background is in Psychology (BA from Coventry) and Applied Psychology (MSc and PhD from Cranfield).

Ann has been involved in UIC safety issues for over 20 years. She began as a member of the Human and Organisational Factors Working Group (HOFWG), most recently as Vice-Chair.

Then, in June 2021, she took over the Chair position of the UIC TreSP network.

Ann est une professionnelle de la sécurité forte de plus de vingt-cinq ans d’expérience, principalement dans le secteur ferroviaire. Elle a rejoint le RSSB en 2000 en tant que spécialiste des facteurs humains, avant de prendre la tête du département HF, qu’elle a développé pour atteindre un effectif total de 14 professionnels jouissant d’une réputation internationale. Elle a passé la première partie de sa carrière à l’université de Cranfield en tant que chercheuse, menant des recherches sur la sécurité aérienne pour les autorités aéronautiques britanniques et américaines ainsi que pour Shell.

Ann a une formation universitaire en psychologie (licence de Coventry) et en psychologie appliquée (master et doctorat de Cranfield).

Biography: 

Isabelle has been working in an international environment from the very beginning of her carrier in September 1988.  

From January 1992 she has been working at UIC, the worldwide professional association representing the railway sector and promoting rail transport, in different domains of activities (high speed, economics, environment, technology and research, interoperability and safety).   

From December 2009 until today:  

• Senior Advisor, Safety and Interoperability particularly in charge of level crossing safety, trespass and suicide prevention issues at the UIC Safety Unit.  

• Project Manager and Coordinator of the International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD) the unique road/rail safety awareness campaign on a global level (up to 50 countries on board) and from 2022 a second UIC safety awareness campaign on trespassing issues called TRESPAD (Trespass Awareness Day). 

• Project manager of a UIC project using AI to observe behaviours of level crossings users, trespassers and suicidal persons in order to propose mitigation measures to the financing railway companies, members of UIC to improve safety. 

• Coordinator of the UIC Safety Platform and its following working groups:  

• Global Level Crossing Network (GLCN)  

• Trespass and Suicide Prevention Network (TreSP-Network)  

• Systems Safety Management Group (SSMG) dealing with the European Railway Agency safety related working programme

• Member of the UNECE WP1 on Road Traffic Safety and I have been cooperating actively with the UNECE in Geneva to create a Group of Experts on level crossing safety. This group met for the first time in January 2014 and finalized a report in January 2017.  

• Member of a multi-disciplinary group on level crossing safety created on a national level by the French Ministry of Transport to issue a report with recommendations to improve safety at level crossings in France after the level crossing tragedy of Millas in France that happened on 14 December 2017 in France: 6 children died.  

• Member of a French multi-sector brainstorming temporary group on level crossing safety of pedestrians set up by EPSF in 2023. 

• Member of a French multi-sector brainstorming temporary group on road users at level crossings set up by BEATT in 2024.

Deputy Managing Director for Safety at SNCF Réseau.

A graduate of the École Nationale de l’Aviation Civile and holder of an Executive Master’s degree from Sciences Po and the University of St Andrews, Damien Pallant has spent most of his career at Air France, where he has held various operational and transformation management roles, rising over the course of 22 years from co-pilot to Director of Operational Performance.

He joined SNCF in 2016 as Deputy Group Director of Safety. In March 2020, he was appointed to the Executive Committee of SNCF Voyageurs as Director of Safety. There, he initiated a transformation of the company’s safety culture whilst making SNCF Voyageurs a leading company in the implementation of the regulatory framework of the 4th European Railway Package regarding safety. He was appointed Deputy Managing Director for Safety at SNCF Réseau in 2022.

Lead Human Factors Specialist, RSSB

Tom is a Lead Human Factors Specialist at the Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) in the UK. He has a BSc (Hons) Psychology, an MSc Safety and Human Factors (Cranfield) and is a Chartered Ergonomist & Human Factors Specialist (C.ErgHF) with the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (MCIEHF). Tom has developed and delivered projects and training across many aspects of human factors, including accident and incident investigation, train operations, infrastructure/ workforce safety and operational decision making, and has operational experience as a Signaller at some of London’s busiest signalling centres.

Mgr. Pavlína Skládaná has been working since 1996 in Transport Research Centre (CDV) as traffic researcher. As a sociologist, she is focused on human factors in road and rail safety, investigating attitudes of road users and the impact of measures and infrastructure on their behaviour. In recent projects, she has been dealing with the issues of trespassing, railway crossings and SPAD.

Mgr Pavlína Skládaná travaille depuis 1996 au Centre de recherche sur les transports (CDV) en tant que chercheuse spécialisée dans le domaine de la circulation. Dr. Barić is a Full Professor at the University of Zagreb’s Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences, specialising in transport engineering and multi-criteria decision-making with a particular research focus on level crossings and trespassing issues. Leading a research group dedicated to level crossings, she has designed and implemented various safety measures aimed at preventing accidents. Active in scientific and professional associations, she is a member of the Global Level Crossing Network and the Trespass and Suicide Prevention Network at UIC and serves as Croatia’s representative at the European Union Agency for Railways. Dr. Barić has authored over 100 scientific papers and has organised many national and international workshops and conferences, including ILCAD 2018 in Zagreb.

Louise McNally joined Network Rail in January 2015 and has worked in public safety related roles throughout that time.  As Suicide & Trespass Prevention Lead for Network Rail, she is responsible for strategy and policy in this area and leads national workstreams on, education, awareness, technology improvement and other interventions.  Louise works in partnership with the wider rail industry, British Transport Police, local and national government. public health agencies, national charities and a range of other partners to reduce the risk of trespass and vulnerable presentations on Suicide and Trespass Prevention Lead.

Dr. Katrina Smart is a senior AI/ML engineer and data scientist with ten years of experience developing and applying artificial intelligence, machine learning, data analytics, and statistical modeling to complex, heterogeneous datasets. Her work includes deep learning, probabilistic machine learning, anomaly detection, classification, source characterization, predictive modeling, and pattern-of-life analysis to identify rail trespassing paths. She heads several AI/ML projects spanning environmental, atmospheric, acoustic, hydrological, materials, behavioral, and transportation domains. She holds a PhD in Computer Science from Florida Institute of Technology and a BS in Physics from the University of San Diego.

La Dr Katrina Smart est ingénieure senior en IA/ML et data scientist. Elle possède dix ans d’expérience dans le développement et l’application de l’intelligence artificielle, de l’apprentissage automatique, de l’analyse de données et de la modélisation statistique à des ensembles de données complexes et hétérogènes. Jodi Godfrey is a Florida native and a Senior Research Associate at the Center for Urban Transportation Research (CUTR) at the University of South Florida (USF), where she works on the Transit Safety and Workforce Development Program.  Ms. Godfrey received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering from USF. Jodi serves as the vice chair of the American Public Transportation Association Bus Safety Committee. Ms. Godfrey is also a member of the Transportation Research Board Committee on Transit Operations (AP014) and serves as a Handling Editor for the Transportation Research Record. Jodi also serves on the Advisory Board for TAT, formerly known as Truckers Against Trafficking. Jodi is passionate about safety, improving workforce development in the transportation industry, and fighting to end human trafficking. Ms. Godfrey has published work related to trespassing and suicide in transit, light rail transit design and operations from a safety perspective, employee safety reporting, crashworthiness and crash energy management of transit buses, onboard technologies to reduce accidents and incidents, National Household Travel Survey trend data analysis, the role of public transit in natural disaster response, attracting and retaining the workforce to the transportation industry, training initiatives to reduce accidents and incidents, and so much more. Jodi’s passion for improving safety and security is rooted in both her personal experience and her incredible hope for the future.

Consultant on suicide prevention in public spaces for the Papageno programme

After studying sociology and gaining experience in project management in Quebec, Caroline joined the suicide prevention sector in 2019. She rolled out the VigilanS programme and then the 3114 helpline (the national suicide prevention number) in various regions. She now works for the Papageno programme, where she is responsible for the prevention of suicide at high-risk locations.

Currently Head of Department at the GHU Paris et Neurosciences, based at Sainte Anne Hospital, Paris. His department, ‘PsyLine’, is dedicated to developing care via telephone and new digital tools. His main area of expertise is suicidology, the branch of psychiatry dedicated to the prevention of suicidal behaviour. This includes, in particular, the 3114, the national professional suicide prevention helpline, and VigilanS, a health monitoring system for patients who have recently attempted suicide.

He also runs an outpatient clinic, catering both to adult patients with mood disorders and to police officers from the Paris Police Prefecture experiencing suicidal thoughts.

Finally, he carries out a wide range of training, prevention and awareness-raising activities on the issues of suicide and the contagion of suicidal behaviour, notably through the Papageno programme.

Il a par ailleurs une activité de consultation externe, tant pour des patients adultes souffrant de troubles de l’humeur que pour les fonctionnaires de la préfecture de police présentant des idées suicidaires.

Enfin, il réalise de multiples actions de formation/prévention/sensibilisation autour de la question du suicide et de la contagiosité suicidaire, notamment avec le programme Papageno. 

Olivier is 55 years old and has three children. A helicopter pilot for Samu 86, he also devotes part of his time to writing. Having been directly affected by a suicide crisis, he has now been involved in the collective effort to prevent suicide for five years.

Clinical psychologist with experience in child and adolescent psychology, and former train driver, train traffic controller and railway consultant, bringing both clinical and operational perspectives to current work in transport suicide prevention.

Senior Advisor Railway Safety, Trafikverket

Helena is a Senior Advisor in Railway Safety at the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket). She joined Trafikverket in 2013, where her work focuses on suicide and trespass prevention on state-owned railways, including safety measures at level crossings.

Her academic career began in 2002 when she enrolled as a PhD student. In 2008, she earned her PhD with a doctoral thesis on railway suicide prevention. From 2008 to 2013, she served as a Senior Lecturer at Karlstad University in Sweden.

Dr. Rådbo was also actively involved in the EU-funded Restrail project (REduction of Suicides and Trespasses on RAILway property) from 2011 to 2014. In recent years, she has expanded her international engagement through her involvement with the Global Level Crossing Network (GLCN) and the International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD).

At the national level, she is engaged in research projects at the Karolinska Institute, including studies funded by the Swedish Transport Administration.

Helena est conseillère principale en sécurité ferroviaire à l’Administration suédoise des transports (Trafikverket). Elle a rejoint Trafikverket en 2013, où son travail porte principalement sur la prévention des suicides et des intrusions sur le réseau ferroviaire public, notamment sur les mesures de sécurité aux passages à niveau.

Worked briefly as a youth worker at a social services organisation before moving to Stockholm, Sweden. Began working as a Research Assistant at the National Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention (NASP). Completed a Master of Medical Science in Public Health Promotion and Prevention at Karolinska Institutet. Currently doing a PhD in Medical Science at Karolinska Institutet, with Jesper Alvarsson-Hjort, Gergö Hadlaczky and Vladimir Carli as supervisors.

A commencé à travailler comme assistante de recherche au Centre national de recherche et de prévention du suicide (NASP). A obtenu un master en sciences médicales, spécialité promotion de la santé publique et prévention, à l’Institut Karolinska. Prépare actuellement un doctorat en sciences médicales à l’Institut Karolinska, sous la direction de Jesper Alvarsson-Hjort, Gergö Hadlaczky et Vladimir Carli.

With a Master degree in chemistry, Bart started his career in 1984 working in Drinking water safety. He developed several new analytical methods to measure pesticides and radioactivity in rivers and drinking water. After some time, Bart became the head of drinking water laboratories in The Hague and later in Utrecht. After the terrorist attacks in New York in 2001 Bart developed a security management system to protect drinking water facilities.  

In 2007 Bart made a career move to the railways working in the Safety Department at ProRail, the infrastructure manager in the Netherlands. His main focusses there are: safety data collection, effect analysis, safety modelling and IT-support for safety. Since 2010 Bart is/was active in several UIC-groups and projects: IRSN, RestRail, Safety Performance Group, UIC-Safety Platform and the TRESP-network. Bart is working on a PhD-thesis in the field of suicides on the railways.

Ses principales missions sont la collecte de données de sécurité, l’analyse d’impact, la modélisation de la sécurité et le soutien informatique en matière de sécurité. Depuis 2010, Bart est/était actif au sein de plusieurs groupes et projets de l’UIC : IRSN, RestRail, Safety Performance Group, UIC-Safety Platform et le réseau TRESP. Bart travaille actuellement sur une thèse de doctorat dans le domaine des suicides sur les voies ferrées.

My name is Leonie Bosselaar, I am 47 years old and live with my partner Arjan and our cat Nozem in Utrecht. I have always worked in communication, mostly as a spokesperson for organizations like the police, and in 2019 I started as a spokesperson at NS. In this role, I often encountered the impact of suicide, which became very personal to me when my niece died by suicide in 2021. That experience made me want to do more on this important issue. At NS, I found the opportunity to become a policy advisor for suicide prevention. Together with ProRail, we work closely to reduce suicides on the railway, driven by the belief that every life saved matters.
